ASK A NATURAL BEAUTY - OLIVIA THORPE
I've tried a lot of natural products in my time - some great and some not-so great. But every once in a while something blows me away - and this is what happened when I first tried Vanderohe’s No.1 Serum. Firstly, it ticks all the 'clean' beauty boxes for me - certified organic, bottled in dark glass packaging (to protect the oil), no fillers. Secondly, the packaging and branding is unique and beautiful. But most of all, THIS PRODUCT WORKS. After one use at night, I noticed a difference in skin brightness and tone by time I woke up! And I'm yet to recommend it to anyone who doesn't absolutely love it.
So on a sunny Friday afternoon in late August, I finally got to meet the brains behind Vanderohe, Olivia Thorpe. The ultimate proof that women can have it all! Now a mum of three (Olivia's due date was just one week after we met!) and running her own successful natural beauty brand. Plus - she formulated the products herself!
In a world of sponsored posts and advertising, I'm obsessed with getting personal recommendations. Here are the 10 questions I'd been dying to ask Olivia about her beauty routine and more...
FRANCES PHILLIPS : WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING?
OLIVIA THORPE : "Have a cup of (English Breakfast) tea. I can't start the day without it!"
FP : TALK ME THROUGH YOUR DAILY SKINCARE ROUTINE...
OT : "I cleanse using Vanderohe No.1 Purifying Cleansing Oil, which is a really gentle but deep-cleansing oil. If I feel like I need a bit of a scrub, I'll add a pinch of Vanderohe No.1 Exfoliating Powder to the oil, which together creates a really perfect exfoliating balm. I'll follow with Vanderohe No.1 Nourishing Face Serum and that's it. If I'm feeling particularly tired, I'll sometimes apply May Lindstrom The Clean Dirt mask before getting in the shower in the morning, but that's about the only non-Vanderohe product I'll use on my skin."
FP : FAVOURITE NATURAL BEAUTY BUY (BESIDES VANDEROHE)?
OT : "ILIA make-up - their highlighting and blusher sticks in particular. John Masters organics shampoo & conditioner. Yarok hair conditioning spray."
FP : FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?
OT : "The Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru in the Maldives. Quite simply heaven on earth."
FP : WHO'S YOUR ULTIMATE GIRL CRUSH?
OT : "Olivia Palermo. Since becoming a mum I stick to a very simple, monochrome uniform of denim + black/white/grey cotton or cashmere tops. I alternate a few very special, understated, pieces of jewellery. So Olivia just seems like this fascinating Bird of Paradise to me; always adorned in huge glinting jewels, colour and prints and yet somehow makes it look like the most natural getup in the world."
FP : WHAT'S YOUR GO-TO DISH?
OT : "My husband's spaghetti pomodoro. There is no better tomato sauce!"
FP : DREAM MEAL OUT IN LONDON?
OT : "The River Cafe, always"
FP : BATH OR SHOWER?
OT : "Shower in the mornings, bath in the evenings"
FP : AS A MUM OF THREE & A CEO OF A BEAUTY COMPANY, HOW DO YOU SWITCH OFF?
OT : "I read the Daily Mail app before bed! The quickest, most effective way of emptying my head of all the "important" things and falling fast asleep!"
FP : AND FINALLY, WHAT DOES 'NATURAL BEAUTY' MEAN TO YOU?
OT : "It means healthy beauty and it involves embracing - and enhancing - your authentic self. It's much more than just skin-deep; natural beauty is twofold and health, happiness and a sense of self-love (or self-appreciation) is as important as any product you put on your skin. That's why I try to make sure every Vanderohe product I create works as effectively on the mind, through aromatherapy, as it does topically on the skin."
